Questions about the stacks
How are the titles ordered in the stacks?
By the first significant word of the title, with a leading "A", "An" or "The" ignored for filing purposes, which is the convention a physical catalogue uses. "The Left Hand of Darkness" therefore files under L rather than T. Titles beginning with a numeral are collected in the 0–9 shelf at the head of the list.
Why do the web addresses look dated compared with the rest of the site?
Because they have deliberately not been modernised. Each review keeps the exact address it has always had, so that older links, bookmarks and citations pointing at these pages continue to resolve to the page they were written about. Tidying the addresses would have broken every one of those references for a purely cosmetic gain.
What does a single archive entry contain?
The review text as written, the name of the book and its author, and the connections the piece originally made to other titles in the library. Where a review pointed a reader onward, that list is preserved and appears under "Continue through the collection" at the foot of the entry, so the paths between books survive alongside the books themselves.
How do the stacks relate to the essays?
The stacks hold the verdicts and the essays hold the arguments. An entry here tells a reader what a book is and whether it succeeds; an essay takes one mechanism inside a book and examines it across several hundred words, drawing on entries in this catalogue as comparative evidence. Readers commonly move in both directions, so each side links to the other.
